Pixar Animation Studios was founded in 1986 in California, USA. Pixar filmmakers combine art and technology to create original stories using the medium of computer animation. In its 30 years of existence, Pixar has earned a reputation not only for innovative use of animation technology, but also for carrying on the tradition of creating heart-warming stories and memorable characters through traditional artistic media.
From Toy Story, the studio's first ever fully computer animated feature film, to its most recent film Coco, the theme of friendship and family is always at the heart of Pixar movies – two of the closest relationships in our life, which stand with us and keep us going no matter what ups and downs we encounter.
In view of the fruitful results of presenting an exhibition of Pixar's stunning collections in 2011, Hong Kong Heritage Museum is delighted to take the opportunity to join hands with Pixar again in presenting a special exhibition with the theme "friendship and family", curated exclusively for Hong Kong. This exhibition is one of the cultural events for celebrating the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
The exhibition features a fine selection of artwork created on traditional and digital media, including hand-drawn sketches, paintings, storyboards and sculptures, created by the artists at Pixar Animation Studios as they contribute to the development process for each film. Every shape, colour and line in the artwork is designed to convey the desires, heartache, sadness, joy and love of the characters and the story they are part of. Together with the videos of artists' interviews, which give visitors a behind-the-scenes glimpse of how they come up with story ideas, the exhibition offers a rare and unique opportunity to experience the craftsmanship and creative process behind Pixar's films through over 300 exhibits
